Professor John Dunn: Qatar gas couldn't replace European import from Russia

TEHRAN(Bazaar) – A professor of political science at the University of Cambridge says there are very few natural gas import terminals in western Europe and the United Kingdom is at present better placed than, for example, Germany.

In an interview with Bazaar, John Dunn adds even over a longer time horizon Qatar natural gas couldn't simply replace current levels of import from Russia (or at any rate the levels provided until this year when Russia has been carefully constricting supply in order to put pressure on the West and especially on Germany.

In the following, we read John Dan's full answer regarding the reasons for the Emir of Qatar's visit to the United States and the supply of European gas by this country on the Persian Gulf.

“On my understanding, there are very few natural gas import terminals in western Europe and the United Kingdom is at present better placed than, for example, Germany. It would certainly be possible to import Qatar gas in significant quantities to Britain quite fast. It would take longer to do so too much of Europe. In the short term Europe is overwhelmingly dependent on Russian gas.

Even over a longer time horizon Qatar natural gas couldn't simply replace current levels of import from Russia (or at any rate the levels provided until this year when Russia has been carefully constricting supply in order to put pressure on the West and especially on Germany.

I imagine that Russia would keenly dislike it if Qatar did start supplying Europe on a large scale. On the other hand, Qatar isn't obviously dependent on Russia for anything important, so with American support and not too much consequent Saudi menacing it should be fairly easy for it to implement its choice.

The Biden administration started very hostile to Saudi Arabia, and the Crown Prince in particular, partly because of the Kashoggi murder. It's relaxed in that respect, but it would like to widen its options amongst Gulf oil states and Qatar is best placed at present to be really helpful in face of Russian leverage on Europe and aggressive pressure on Ukraine.
