Bazaar: According to the American outlet, Iran’s Ministry of Defense is currently paying for the storage and maintenance of these fighters inside Russia until they are transferred to Iran and housed at Russian facilities.
Leaked Russian government documents confirm that Iran’s Ministry of Defense has ordered 48 Su‑35s, following earlier Iranian statements that an unspecified number had been purchased. Delivery of Yak‑130 trainer aircraft to Iran began in September 2023, reportedly to support pilot training for the new fighters.
The first Su‑35s may arrive in Iran starting in 2026. Some sources state that damage to infrastructure at Hamadan Air Base is a major factor delaying their transfer.
The Su‑35 purchase is not the only acquisition; Russian sources confirm that Iran has also ordered 12 Su‑30SM2 aircraft, expected to be delivered from Russian operational units beginning in mid‑2027.
There are also indications that Iran has placed an order for fifth‑generation Su‑57 fighters.
Lead: Iran may start receiving its first Su‑35 jets in 2026 amid delays.
