Tariq Rauf: Until end of Ukraine war, US will probably not return to JCPOA

TEHRAN(Bazaar) – Tariq Raouf, former Director General of the Atomic Energy Agency says On the contrary the new extreme right-wing regime of Netanyahu is preparing for a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and it seems that the Biden team may turn a blind eye (as it is angered by Iran's drone supplies to Russia).

He adds that if Iran increases its 60% enriched stock of about 68 kg to 100+kg or more, or increases enrichment level above 60%, then that increases Netanyahu's motivation to attack Iran.

“Iran likely will not see the US returning to the JCPOA talks until the Ukraine war has ended,” Rauf told Bazaar news agency.

Following is the text of the Bazaar interview with Tariq Raouf.

Q: Jarrett Blanc, the U.S. deputy special envoy for Iran and one of the main players in the indirect negotiations with Iran's nuclear program, plans to soon leave the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Robert Malley's team and join the Ministry of Energy. What is the reason for this change?

A: I think there are multiple explanations, including that Jarrett Blanc is moving to a better job as part of normal career development after serving in his present position for some years; Axios probably is reflecting the Biden team's position that with Iran cracking down on women protestors and supplying Russia with armed drones has made it impossible for them to continue to engage with Tehran. Especially drone supplies to Russia cannot be tolerated; as such Iran likely will not see the US returning to the JCPOA talks until the Ukraine war has ended.

Q: The Hebrew newspaper, Israel Hum, wrote in a report that the US is making contact with Iran on various issues, and it is possible to examine the possibilities of a limited agreement with Iran on the nuclear issue. What is your assessment?

A: On the contrary the new extreme right-wing regime of Netanyahu is preparing for a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and it seems that the Biden team may turn a blind eye (as it is angered by Iran's drone supplies to Russia). If Iran increases its 60% enriched stock of about 68 kg to 100+kg or more, or increases enrichment level above 60%, then that increases Netanyahu's motivation to attack Iran. He has been quite vocal on this.

Q: Ned Price, the spokesperson of the US Department of State, said the US has ways to communicate with Iran regarding several worrying issues, including the issue of the release of American citizens detained there. The nuclear agreement has not been on Washington's agenda for months. We do not focus on this issue, but rather on the growing military involvement of Tehran and Moscow and Russia's war in Ukraine. Do you think that if a limited agreement is to be reached, the United States will link the issues of military cooperation between Iran and Russia to it?

A: For the US, the Iranian military supplies to Russia has crossed a red line and will not engage with Iran until this end.
