John Dunn: Iran and Saudi negotiation should not be affected by Biden's trip

TEHRAN(Bazaar) – John Dunn, professor of political science at the University of Cambridge says “Iran and Saudi would both be well advised to negotiate a less fraught and destructive relation with one another. It would be wisest for them to do this directly (they both have a lot to gain and not much to lose) rather than try to mediate it through the somewhat incoherent processes of the American state at present.”

Following is the full text of the interview:

Bazaar: While it was said that the American policy regarding the Persian Gulf has changed due to the containment of China, we are witnessing the importance of the region’s oil after the war in Ukraine. Do you agree with this argument?

Dunn: Saudi decisions about OPEC provision are certainly even more important than before. It is the degree of discretion over flow which makes them so. No other state has that degree of discretion.

Bazaar: Biden's trip to the region is an attempt to find a way to reduce oil prices with Saudi’s help. Will this happen?

Dunn: That is certainly what Biden is trying to do.

Bazaar: The United States is trying to encourage Saudi Arabia to stage a coup against Russia by withdrawing from the OPEC+ agreement and subsequently increasing oil production to improve its price in Western countries. Is this happening?

Dunn: I would be very surprised if Saudi Arabia decided to withdraw from OPEC (which has served them extremely well over the decades- I am answering from Vienna! - at this point.

Bazaar: What effect will Biden's trip to the region has on nuclear negotiations with Iran?

Dunn: I would be surprised if Biden's trip affected the nuclear negotiation process (or non-process).

Bazaar: Will this trip affect the negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia?

Dunn: Iran and Saudi would both be well advised to negotiate a less fraught and destructive relation with one another. It would be wisest for them to do this directly (they both have a lot to gain and not much to lose) rather than try to mediate it through the somewhat incoherent processes of the American state at present.
