Professor Askari: JCPOA is dead

Professor Hossein Askari, who teaches international business at the George Washington University, says for many reasons, the JCPOA is dead.

He adds: “Israel has not supported Ukraine as Biden has wanted. They did not co-sponsor the UNSC resolution sponsored by the U.S.”

Following is the full text.

Q: Israel's Knesset elections ended with the victory of Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing coalition. Many analysts believe that the cabinet headed by him will be the most right-wing cabinet in Israel. What is the effect of Netanyahu's victory on the region?

A: Yes, it will be the rightest wing, anti-Arab and anti-Muslim administration in Israeli history. The coalition will rob Arabs of most rights that they still have. It is also rumored that Israeli soldiers will be immune from prosecution when they shoot and kill Palestinians.

Q: Netanyahu won while the Arab League meeting emphasized the Arab peace plan. What actions may Netanyahu take to undermine the Arab peace plan?

A: He will expand his coalition with Persian Gulf Arabs, especially Saudi Arabia, the UAE and maybe Kuwait. He will also lobby aggressively with his U.S. allies to torpedo any initiative for a peace plan or bad publicity for settlement expansion and harsh treatment of Palestinians.

Q: Netanyahu's victory comes while the democratic government is at work in America and insists on the two-state solution. What will be the relationship between Israel and the US considering Netanyahu's rise to power?

A: Cool relations while Biden is in power and if Democrats hold onto the Congress, but all bets are off if there is a Republican president and if they also control the Congress. But remember, Israel has awesome lobbying in the United States and sway with the media, so they will have influenced no matter who is power.

Q: Considering Netanyahu's serious opposition to the JCPOA, how do you see the prospect of reviving the JCPOA?

A: For many reasons, the JCPOA is dead.

Q: Netanyahu is Putin's friend, and the relations between Israel and Russia are bad after the war in Ukraine. It seems that Netanyahu has to choose between America and Russia. What is your assessment?

A: Israel has not supported Ukraine as Biden has wanted. They did not co-sponsor the UNSC resolution sponsored by the U.S. They have not supplied Ukraine with needed weaponry, especially air defense. So, I think Israel and Netanyahu will still play both sides and get away with it. Remember, because Israel has awesome lobbying power in the U.S. across the board--with the Congress, corporations, wealthy Jews and the media. Netanyahu does not have to choose.
