Frank N. von Hippel: Global dependence on Persian Gulf oil will decline

TEHRAN(Bazaar) – Professor Frank N. von Hippel, former assistant director for national security in the White House Office of Science and Technology, says Global dependence on Persian Gulf oil will decline if the effort to phase out fossil fuels to save the climate is successful.

He adds “Countries like Iran too should shift to renewable energy and try to shift away from a dependence on oil exports.”

Following is the text of the Bazaar interview with Professor Frank N. von Hippel.

Q: The decision of OPEC+ to reduce the production of two million barrels has caused disputes between America and Saudi Arabia. How serious are these differences?

A: It is difficult to say. It is certainly not helpful politically to the Democrats in the US where the price of gasoline appears to be a surprisingly important issue in the Congressional election.

Q: How effective is the OPEC+ decision in keeping energy prices high at the global level?

A: It is difficult for me to say.

Q: It seems that with this decision, Saudi Arabia has this assessment that the Biden government is a one-term administration, and with this action, it also provides the ground for the presence of Republicans in the White House. Do you agree with this assessment?

A: It helps the Republicans in this election, which will help them in the 2024 election if they are able to use the positions, they win to subvert that election.

Q: Some American officials talk about revising relations with Saudi Arabia. Are these threats serious or are they basically caused by the diminishing importance of the Persian Gulf in America's national security strategy?

A: Global dependence on Persian Gulf oil will decline if the effort to phase out fossil fuels to save the climate is successful. Countries like Iran too should shift to renewable energy and try to shift away from a dependence on oil exports. Iran’s population is relatively well educated and could provide the basis for an economy like Europe’s.
