Thomas Erl is a best-selling IT author who has authored and co-authored 15 books published by Pearson Education (and Prentice Hall) dedicated to contemporary information technology and practices. Bazaar: What are the benefits of cloud computing technology for businesses?
Erl: The primary business benefits that cloud computing is typically associated with are cost savings and increased responsiveness of the business's automation solutions. Cloud environments can be leased by businesses using a pay-per-use model so that the business only pays for actual usage. Furthermore, much of a business's infrastructure can be outsourced to a cloud, thereby alleviating the business from having to maintain it itself. These are commonly promoted cost benefits. However, in many cases, cloud environments have not been properly utilized and have resulted in cost increases instead of cost savings. The responsiveness benefit is related to a cloud's ability to dynamically scale a business's automation solution so that it can be responsive to usage, regardless of how unpredictable the usage may be.
Bazaar: For which businesses can it be more suitable?
Erl: Cloud computing has reached a stage where it is accessible to just about any sized company that has automation solutions and/or data that can benefit from being hosted by a cloud provider. For smaller companies, it can be attractive because they can defer the responsibility of maintaining their systems without having to invest in onsite IT infrastructure. For larger companies, it can be further beneficial because they can evolve their systems without having necessarily having to evolve their onsite infrastructure correspondingly. Companies that are concerned about having their systems or data hosted externally can consider a private cloud environment that they still control, but that can also benefit from contemporary cloud technology.
Bazaar: What should governments do to build infrastructure and facilitate its use for businesses?
Erl: To support the ever-growing demands on our telecommunications infrastructures, governments can support establishing more powerful telecommunication environments, such as those provided by 5G networks.
Bazaar: What do you think is the outlook for cloud computing in the coming year?
Erl: With more and more businesses undergoing digital transformation and increasing or improving their online digital presence, cloud computing environments become more and more essential. However, there have been many failed cloud projects that have resulted in losses and disappointments, and from those best practices have emerged that businesses would be wise to follow.
